The Intention of Separation or Praying Alone in Prayer

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Fatwa No. ( 18872 )
Q: What is meant by the intention of separation or praying alone in prayer, and what are the conditions in which it is prescribed, with guidance?
A : The intention of separation or praying alone in prayer means: that the praying person, who is a follower, enters the state of consecration (ihram) with his imam, then intends to separate from the imam during the prayer and completes it alone. This is permissible for a valid excuse, such as if the imam prolongs the prayer beyond the usual custom in a way that harms one who has a need, or burdens an elderly person or a sick person, or if there is fear of theft or loss of one's property, or fear of something that would invalidate one's prayer. This is based on what was narrated by Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him), who said:
Mu'adh used to pray the night prayer with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), then return to his people to lead them in prayer. So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) delayed the night prayer, and Mu'adh prayed with him, then returned to his people and recited Surat al-Baqarah. A man delayed [in joining him] and prayed alone. So it was said to him: "You have become a hypocrite, O so-and-so." He said: "I have not become a hypocrite, but I will go to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and inform him." So he went to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and mentioned that to him. He said: "Are you a tempter, O Mu'adh? Are you a tempter, O Mu'adh?" [twice] "Recite such and such a surah." He said: [Recite] "And the surah of the Lanes, and the Night when it covers, and the Sky and the Star, and has there come to you the news of the Overwhelming?"
, agreed upon by al-Bukhari and Muslim. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did not order that man to repeat the prayer, nor did he rebuke him, which indicates the permissibility of a follower separating from his imam for a need as mentioned. However, if one separates without an excuse or need, it is not permissible for him to do so, and his prayer is defective. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
