Q: Regarding Anas
That the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to turn his face toward us before he would say the takbir and say: Close ranks and straighten upأن النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم كان يقبل علينا بوجهه قبل أن يكبر فيقول: تراصوا واعتدلوا
, narrated by al-Bukhari and Muslim . And they narrated from him that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Straighten your rows for the straightening of the rows is part of perfecting the prayer.سووا صفوفكم فإن تسوية الصف من تمام الصلاة
Sunan Abi Dawud 668Sahih (Al-Albani)
. And from al-Nu'man ibn Bashir he said:
The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to straighten us in the rows as one straightens an arrow, until when he thought that we had taken that from him and understood it, he turned his face one day and saw a man sticking out with his chest, so he said: Straighten your rows, or Allah will cause your faces to differكان رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم يسوينا في الصفوف كما يقوَّم القِدْح حتى إذا ظن أنا قد أخذنا ذلك عنه وفقهنا أقبل ذات يوم بوجهه إذا رجل منتبذ بصدره فقال: لتسون بين صفوفكم أو ليخالفن الله بين وجوهكم
, narrated by the five, from the book (Fiqh al-Sunnah, p. 215). We ask your eminence to explain these hadiths so that we may be able to explain them to the ma'mumin, and may Allah reward you with good.

A : The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) clarified in the aforementioned hadiths the obligation of straightening the rows, and that it is incumbent upon the imam to turn to the ma'mumin and order them to straighten the row, and to close ranks in it, and to press together until there is no gap between them, and not to leave openings for Shaytan, and to complete the first row, then the first row; because in that is the perfection of their prayer, and its completion, and because of the resemblance to the purified angels in their rows before their Lord (Mighty and Majestic).
And the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) threatened those who contradict this that Allah will cause their faces to differ, we ask Allah for well-being, safety, and success for what He loves and is pleased with. And may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad and his family and his Companions.
