He Did Not Find a Space in the Row: How He Should Pray

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Fatwa No. ( 20369 )
Q: A man prayed behind the row with the imam, and then another man joined him in the row after he had prayed the first rak'ah. My question is: Does this man who prayed behind the row have to repeat the rak'ah, or is it valid?
A : If a man prays behind the row alone for one rak'ah or more with the imam, and no one comes to stand in the row with him, whether a man or a discerning child, then his prayer is invalid and not correct, due to the generality of the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):
The prayer of a person who prays alone behind the row is not accepted.لا صلاة لمنفرد خلف الصف
Bulugh al-Maram 2:327
And because it was reported from him (peace and blessings be upon him) that he saw a man praying behind the row and ordered him to repeat the prayerولما ورد عنه صلى الله عليه وسلم أنه رأى رجلاً يصلي خلف الصف فأمره أن يعيد الصلاة
. It was narrated by the imam Ahmad and al-Tirmidhi , who graded it hasan, and by Ibn Majah , and its chain is trustworthy. However, if he prays behind the row and then someone comes to stand in the row with him, even a discerning child, before the imam prostrates in the first prostration of the rak'ah in which he entered with
the imam alone, then his prayer is valid; because his being alone is removed in this case. Accordingly, the prayer of that man who prayed behind the row for a complete rak'ah alone with the imam before anyone came to stand in the row with him is invalid, due to the two previous hadiths. And since the rak'ah he prayed alone with the imam is not valid, it is not permissible for him to build his prayer upon it, and he is obligated to repeat that prayer from the beginning. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
