Q: We seek your ruling, Your Eminence, on the permissibility of having multiple prayer areas in separate departments that are distinct from one another but close together within a single building and inside a single enclosure. Please note that there is a mosque designated for everyone, which does not accommodate the worshippers only at the time of the midday prayer, while at other times it has ample space to accommodate everyone present in these departments. What is the ruling on having multiple prayer areas in those departments and at times other than the midday prayer? Peace be upon you, and Allah’s mercy and blessings.
A: It is obligatory for those present in the departments you mentioned to pray in the mosque at all times. If the mosque does not accommodate them at the time of the midday prayer, it is obligatory to expand the mosque to a size sufficient for them, even if only by adding a temporary canopy until the expansion is completed in a proper manner. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
