The first question of Fatwa No. ( 21339 )
Q1: I have a neighbor who is in her nineties, and she is like a mother to me. She says that she did not pray until after the age of sixty—that is, during post-natal bleeding—and she did not pay attention to the blood. She thought that post-natal bleeding lasted sixty days, and she is the mother
of seven children. What is your opinion, Your Eminence, and how does this woman settle her debt? Knowing that she does not know how much it is.
A1 : The maximum duration of post-natal bleeding is forty days. If a woman completes forty days, she takes a full ritual bath and prays, even if she is still experiencing bleeding, because she is like a woman with irregular non-menstrual bleeding. She performs the ablution for prayer for every prayer and places a cloth or something similar on her private parts to prevent the blood from falling. This is if the bleeding beyond the forty days does not coincide with her usual monthly period. The woman mentioned is not excused for leaving off the prayer for the period exceeding forty days of post-natal bleeding that is not part of her usual menstruation. Therefore, she must make up the past prayers according to her ability. She should strive to estimate the prayers she did not perform since her purity before the forty days, or from the completion of the forty days. She makes up the prayers consecutively, praying the prayers of each day and night in order, until she has completed the days in which she did not perform the prayer after the period of post-natal bleeding. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
