Confusion Between Menstruation and Post-Natal Bleeding

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Fatwa No. ( 18445 )
Q: My wife’s menstrual period before marriage was five days, where the blood would flow for two days, then stop for a day without a night, then continue until it ended completely with no trace on the last day of the fifth day. However, after pregnancy and childbirth, she has suffered in these days from not knowing exactly the days of menstruation. During Ramadan, the post-natal bleeding continued, and she was confused about when the post-natal bleeding would end and the menstrual period would begin, or if there are days after the forty days where blood can be discharged after the post-natal bleeding. Now, in this month, her period lasted five days and stopped, then she completed seven days and became pure, and he had intercourse with her after her purity. But
it happened that light blood came out of her, which lasted two days, and it was nothing but a few drops that gathered on the pad she uses for protection, and the spot did not exceed the medium size, i.e., about 5 cm in the width and length of the spot. What is obligatory for her now in such a case? Must she stop praying? Knowing that the blood was very light in color, and it did not come continuously, but only simple drops about four times a day and night. And does she have to make up the fasting of Ramadan after the post-natal bleeding, since she was afraid that she might be able to fast and break the fast in Ramadan, so she preferred to fast but without prayer, since the blood was coming intermittently after the post-natal bleeding. Also, my wife teaches some Muslim children the Qur'an in a room in the university designated as a prayer place for women, and since the times for teaching the Qur'an are weekly, she asks if she has the right to go to this place to teach the Qur'an to the children during menstruation, or is it considered a mosque? For your information, this room is located inside the university building, but it is designated for prayer only. Please inform us, and may Allah reward you with good.

A : If this woman has a settled custom in menstruation, then she leaves off prayer and fasting in Ramadan during it. Then, if the blood stops completely, she performs the full ritual bath and fasts in Ramadan and prays. If she sees blackish or yellowish discharge after that, she does not pay attention to it and does not consider it anything; due to the saying of Umm Atiyyah
(may Allah be pleased with her):
After we were pure, we did not consider the yellow or muddy discharge to be anythingكنا لا نعد الكدرة والصفرة بعد الطهر شيئًا
Bulugh al-Maram 143
. As for her sitting in the prayer place prepared for women during menstruation, there is no harm in it; because it is not a mosque. But she must not touch the Qur'an while menstruating; due to the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):
no-one should touch the Qur'an unless he was pureلا يمس القرآن إلا طاهر
Muwatta Malik 15:1
. As for post-natal bleeding, once she completes the forty days, she has the ruling of those who are pure, and she must perform the full ritual bath, pray, fast, and become lawful to her husband. What she sees of blood after the forty days is considered defective blood that has no ruling of menstruation and no ruling of post-natal bleeding, except if it coincides with the time of her custom, in which case she sits out her customary days and leaves off prayer and fasting. If the woman in post-natal bleeding sees purity before the completion of the forty days, she performs the full ritual bath, prays, fasts, and becomes lawful to her husband. If the blood returns before the completion of the forty days, she leaves off prayer and fasting until she becomes pure and completes the forty days. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
