The questioner : The Noble Qur'an absolutely forbids the consumption of blood. Does transferring it from one person to another via the arteries count as the forbidden consumption or not? And what is the ruling on selling it or receiving financial compensation in exchange for donating a specific amount of it?
The Shaykh : Allah (Mighty and Majestic) forbade blood in His saying:
Prohibited to you are dead animals, blood, the flesh of swine, and that which has been dedicated to other than Allah, and [those animals] killed by strangling or by a violent blow or by a head-long fall or by the goring of horns, and those from which a wild animal has eaten, except what you [are able to] slaughter [before its death], and those which are sacrificed on stone altars
But He (Glorified and Exalted is He) said after that:
But whoever is forced by necessity, without willfully sinning, then indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Merciful. And on this basis, if a patient is in dire necessity of having blood injected into him, it is permissible for him to have blood injected into him because he is in dire necessity, and dire necessity permits the consumption of blood. As for selling it, it is not permissible to sell it, because when Allah the Exalted forbids something, He forbids its price. However, if a person is in dire necessity of blood and the doctors determine that he will benefit from it, it is not befitting for anyone who is able to save this patient to refrain from doing so, because this falls under the category of excellence in worship, and Allah loves those who do good. If the doctors certify that this person's blood is suitable for the person who needs it, and that the person from whom the blood is taken will not be harmed by its extraction, it is not befitting for a person to refrain from donating blood to his brother to save his life. Perhaps Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) will save him from death through it, and in that, he will have a great reward.
