Permissible Vows

Fatwa No. ( 21850 )
Q: I submit this petition to your Excellency and inform you that I am a widow, disabled, and poor. My husband passed away a long time ago as a result of a traffic accident. I had a son and a daughter from him. After his death, I chose to raise them, care for them, and look after them, and I did not consider remarrying for their sake. I made a vow that on the day my son enters high school, I would buy him a top-quality salon. By the grace and health of the Lord, Mighty and Majestic, he entered high school and is now on the verge of graduating, but I have not been able to fulfill my vow to this day. Therefore, I ask Allah, then you, for your help, and I ask that you look at me with kindness and mercy..
A: This vow is a permissible vow. Its ruling is that the one who made the vow has the choice between fulfilling it and leaving it. If he leaves it, he must expiate it with the expiation for an oath, which is feeding ten poor people, or clothing them, or freeing a believing slave. If he finds none of these, he must fast for three days. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
