Fatwa number ( 18978 )
Q: What is the ruling on responding to the greeting and saying "Yarhamuk Allah" to the sneezer during the Friday sermon ?
A: It is not permissible to say "Yarhamuk Allah" to the sneezer, nor to respond to the greeting of one who greets you while the imam is delivering the sermon, according to the correct opinion of the scholars; due to the generality of the Prophet's (peace and blessings be upon him) prohibition of speaking during the sermon. In (the two Sahihs), it is narrated from Sa'id ibn al-Musayyib that Abu Hurayrah informed him that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
When the Imam is delivering the Khutba, and you ask your companion to keep quiet and listen, then no doubt you have done an evil act.إذا قلت لصاحبك يوم الجمعة: أنصت، والإمام يخطب فقد لغوت
Sahih al-Bukhari 934
This is the wording of al-Bukhari , vol. 1, p. 224. And when Imam Ahmad narrated it in his (Musnad), vol. 2, p. 474, with the wording:
If a man says to his companion on Friday while the imam is delivering the sermon: "Be quiet," he has spoken in vainإذا قال الرجل لصاحبه يوم الجمعة والإمام يخطب: أنصت، فقد لغا
As-Sunan al-Kubra lil-Nasa'i 7:76
, if someone greets you, shake his hand but do not speak in response to the greeting. Respond to his greeting after the preacher finishes the first sermon, or after he finishes the second sermon if he greets you during the second sermon, or respond to him with a gesture like a person in prayer. Likewise, saying "Yarhamuk Allah" to the sneezer is returned by the listener after the preacher finishes the first or second sermon, as mentioned previously. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
