The ruling on responding to a sneeze during the Friday sermon
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Your Eminence! What is the ruling on responding to a sneeze during the Friday sermon? May Allah reward you.
First: One does not respond to a sneezer unless he praises Allah. If he praises Allah, then respond to him, but if that is during the Friday sermon, it is not permissible for you to respond to him, because responding to him is speech, as you are addressing him by saying: “May Allah have mercy on you,” and speech during the sermon is not permissible except out of necessity, and it must be with the preacher. What indicates to me what I have said is the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family): (If you say to your companion, “Be quiet on Friday while the imam is delivering the sermon,” then you have spoken in vain) even though your saying to him, “Be quiet,” if he is talking, is part of forbidding what is wrong. And yet, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) prohibited it and made it clear that a person is deprived of the reward of Friday by it, in that whoever speaks in vain has no Friday [reward] for him.
