Ruling on Hanging Advertisements in the Mosque

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Fatwa No. ( 21565 )
Q: We submit to your eminence that some of the advertisements for lessons and programs intended to be hung in mosques contain the name
of the advertisement designer, his phone number, or the printing press or the cooperating party responsible for issuing it, which carries a promotional purpose for them. We hope your eminence will grant us a ruling, may Allah reward you, on the ruling of hanging an advertisement that includes such promotion on the notice board inside the mosque, outside it, or on its walls.

A: It is not permissible to use mosques, their courtyards, or their walls as a venue for displaying commercial advertisements, whether these advertisements are intended or come incidentally in religious and charitable bulletins and boards; because mosques are built only for the worship of Allah the Exalted, such as prayer, dhikr, learning and teaching knowledge, reciting the Qur'an, and the like. Therefore, it is obligatory to keep mosques pure from what is not befitting them from matters of trade, and among that are promotional commercial advertisements, whether they are intended or incidental to others in religious and charitable bulletins. It is established from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that he said:
When you see someone selling or buying in the Masjid then say: 'May Allah not profit your business.'إذا رأيتم من يبيع أو يبتاع في المسجد فقولوا: لا أربح الله تجارتك
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 1321Sahih (Darussalam)
And displaying commercial advertisements is part of trade. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
