Q: I inform your eminence that I built a mosque next to my residence, where I and my father live, about fifteen years ago, because we were living alone. After a while, a neighbor of ours built a residence, then he built another mosque, larger than my mosque, reinforced concrete, in a large open area, with a minaret. When it was finished, we prayed in congregation there, but I felt something about my previous mosque, so I asked Shaykh Sa'd al-Hajri about it, and he said: You must not boycott your old mosque, so pray in it until you consult Shaykh 'Abd al-'Aziz. Therefore, I ask for your guidance: Do I pray in my old mosque, or with my neighbor in the new mosque, and if the ruling is to pray with my neighbor, what about
my old mosque: should I keep it for the need, or should I demolish it? May Allah preserve you.
A: You must all pray in one mosque, because Islam commands gathering and forbids division. As for your old mosque, which you no longer need because of the new mosque, you should consult the Ministry of Islamic Affairs, Endowments, and Guidance regarding it, as it falls under their jurisdiction. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
