The Dawn Prayer

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Fatwa No. ( 18052 )
Q: What is the dawn prayer, when is its time, how is it performed, and what is the wisdom behind it?
A: The dawn prayer is the Fajr prayer, one of the five obligatory prayers for a Muslim in a day and night. It is performed after its time has entered, which begins with the appearance of the true dawn and ends with the rising of the sun. It is a recommended practice (sunnah) to pray it in the darkness, which ends with the light of daybreak. This is achieved by lengthening the prayer to a degree that does not burden the congregation. It is performed in two rak'ahs, with the recitation pronounced aloud. As for the wisdom behind it: it is among the obligations (fara'id) that Allah has made obligatory upon His servants, as an act of obedience to Him (Glorified and Exalted is He), just like the other obligations. Whoever establishes it and the other obligations in the manner prescribed by the Shari'ah has succeeded and profited, and whoever neglects it has failed
and lost. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
