The Shaykh : This hadith contains several benefits. One is that Khaybar was conquered by force. Khaybar consisted of fortresses and agricultural lands belonging to the Jews in the northwest of Madinah, about a hundred miles away. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) campaigned against it and conquered it by force. The Companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) were occupied with the campaign and Islam, and the people of Khaybar, who were Jews, requested that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) allow them to remain there in exchange for half of the fruit or crops produced there, meaning on a fifty-fifty basis. He negotiated with them on this basis until 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) expelled them during his caliphate because they broke the treaty. Another benefit in it is that it is permissible to begin fighting in the morning, just as it is permissible in the evening. It was the general practice of the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) that when the heat subsided and the winds blew in the late afternoon, he would campaign (peace and blessings be upon him), but this is according to what is in the public interest. Another benefit of this hadith is the permissibility of riding together on a mount, as Anas said that he was riding behind the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Another benefit is that the thigh is not an 'awrah (part of the body that must be covered), because Anas said that his knee touched the thigh of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and that he saw the whiteness of his thigh (may Allah’s prayers and peace be upon him). Is it said that this was due to necessity, and that the izar (waistcloth) of the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) was short, so when he mounted, it slipped up? Or is this evidence that the thigh is not an 'awrah? Some scholars held this view, and others held the other view: either it slipped up due to its shortness when he mounted, revealing his thigh (peace and blessings be upon him), or the thigh is not an 'awrah. There is scholarly disagreement on this issue, but Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah (may Allah have mercy on him) said that this disagreement applies to matters other than prayer. As for in prayer, it is obligatory to cover what is between the navel and the knee, and this is necessary, because this is the minimum garment that can be called clothing. And Allah the Exalted said: [Al-A'raf 7:31] What the Shaykh (may Allah have mercy on him) said is definitive. Accordingly, there are two types of covering: one for prayer, which must be from the navel to the knee, and another for the gaze, in which there is leeway, and it is said that the thigh is not an 'awrah. Accordingly, if you see a worker who has lifted his garment for the sake of work until his thigh is visible, then there is nothing wrong with that, especially if it is far from the level of the private parts.
