Decoration of the mihrab
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Fatwa number ( 20608 )
Q: We have a mosque being built with the funds of benefactors, and the person overseeing the construction of the mosque wants to place decorations and Qur'anic verses in the mosque's mihrab, as well as on the ceiling and the pillars. I have already informed him that decorations inside the mosque and Qur'anic verses in the mosque are not permissible
according to what we have heard from the scholars, and the overseer argued that most mosques have these decorations and verses. Is that permissible or not? Please inform us, may Allah reward you.
A: It is not permissible to decorate mosques or to write Qur'anic verses on their walls; because of the risk of the Qur'an being subjected to disrespect, and because of the decoration of mosques which is prohibited, and because it distracts the worshippers from their prayer by looking at those writings and engravings. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
