Restrooms in Mosques

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Fatwa No. ( 20299 )
Q: We are a mosque community, and we have a restroom—may Allah reward you—inside the mosque, next to the prayer hall, with a wall separating them. Since it is on the qiblah side, and one faces the qiblah when relieving oneself, we would like your Highness to inform us about this matter. Is there any harm in leaving it as it is, or what do you see regarding this issue? We would appreciate your kindness in providing a fatwa on this matter so that the benefit may reach everyone, and may you receive reward and recompense from Allah (Mighty and Majestic).
A: It is obligatory to separate the restroom so that it is outside the mosque, and a wall should be placed between it and the mosque. After that, it does not matter if it is next to the mosque on any side. As for facing the qiblah while relieving oneself, there is no harm in doing so inside a building, according to the correct view; because it has been established from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), in the hadith of Ibn 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both), what indicates the permissibility of facing the qiblah and turning one’s back to it while relieving oneself, if that is inside a building.
And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
