Q: It is established that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:As-Sunan al-Kubra lil-Nasa'i 62:283 What is the meaning of this hadith?
A: By mourning in the manner of the pre-Islamic age of ignorance, it is meant claiming affiliation with a tribe or clan. "Mourning" (al-'aza) is the verbal noun for the cry of one seeking aid, which is to say: "O so-and-so!" or "O sons of so-and-so!" This is a form of boasting, arrogance, and magnifying oneself over others by claiming affiliation with one's clan and people to whom one belongs. So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) commanded whoever hears someone magnifying himself through his clan with the cry of the pre-Islamic age of ignorance to say to him: This is to remind this arrogant person of the organ from which he emerged, which is his father's private part, so that he will cease from the mourning of the pre-Islamic age of ignorance.
And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
