Fatwa number ( 21069 )
Q: In our field of work, there is a department responsible for teaching a group of subjects, including: military history, geography, administration, library and research methods, etc. This department is called the "Department of Humanities." Among the subjects taught are the Noble Qur'an and Islamic culture. Is it permissible to include the subject of the Noble Qur'an, which is divine knowledge—a revelation from Allah—among the subjects of the humanities? Please inform us, and may Allah reward you with the best reward.
A : The Noble Qur'an is truly the speech of Allah, which He revealed to His Messenger Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) to guide people to their Lord (Glorified and Exalted is He). Allah the Exalted said:
Alif, Lam, Ra. [This is] a Book which We have revealed to you, [O Muhammad], that you might bring mankind out of darknesses into the light by permission of their Lord - to the path of the Exalted in Might, the Praiseworthy -الر كِتَابٌ أَنْـزَلْنَاهُ إِلَيْكَ لِتُخْرِجَ النَّاسَ مِنَ الظُّلُمَاتِ إِلَى النُّورِ بِإِذْنِ رَبِّهِمْ إِلَى صِرَاطِ الْعَزِيزِ الْحَمِيدِ
[Ibrahim 14:1]
, and it is part of the knowledge of Allah by which Allah has bestowed favor upon His servants and taught it to them, as in His saying (Exalted and Majestic is He)—according to one of the two interpretations of the exegesis:—
But Allah bears witness to that which He has revealed to you. He has sent it down with His knowledgeلَكِنِ اللَّهُ يَشْهَدُ بِمَا أَنْـزَلَ إِلَيْكَ أَنْـزَلَهُ بِعِلْمِهِ
[An-Nisa 4:166]
meaning: it contains divine knowledge, Shari'ah rulings, and news of the unseen that is from the knowledge of Allah the Exalted, which He taught His servants.
Therefore, it is not permissible to include the Noble Qur'an among the "humanities"; because that implies that it is of human origin, and it equates it with other worldly sciences of the people of this world. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
