Fatwa No. ( 18046 )
The Permanent Committee for Scholarly Research and Ifta has reviewed what was sent to His Eminence the Grand Mufti from His Excellency the Deputy Minister of Education, and referred to the Committee by the General Secretariat of the Council of Senior Scholars, with number (3050) and date 26/6/1416 AH. His Excellency asked a question, the text of which is as follows: We are forwarding to Your Eminence the question received from the Education Directorate of al-Bahah , regarding the permissibility of using the name “Qur’anic subject” among the study subjects
that students study, and which is mentioned in the circulars issued by the ministries and education departments. We would like your Eminence to clarify whether it is permissible to use this word or not, and what you think the name should be. May Allah preserve you and care for you. Upon reviewing the question from the Education Department of al-Bahah , which reads: “We frequently receive circulars from the Ministry and from some education departments that use the term ‘Qur'an subject’ when the topic concerns the Noble Qur'an. Since the word ‘subject’ refers to a created thing, and the Qur'an is the speech of Allah, Glorified and Exalted, which is not created and the word ‘subject’ is not appropriate for it; therefore, we would like you to clarify whether it is permissible to use this word or not.”

After the Committee studied the inquiry, it answered as follows: There is no harm in saying in educational curricula: “Qur’anic subject”; because in the custom of those responsible for education, “subjects” refers to the sciences taught to students, so one says: Tafsir subject, Hadith subject, Qur’anic subject, and it does not refer in educational custom to what the objector indicated (the created thing), so there is no objection to what was mentioned. And all praise is due to Allah.
And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad and his family and his Companions.
