Q: I own commercial establishments in the city of Khamis Mushayt , and we have printed our commercial name on plastic bags in which our customers take their goods. Our commercial name is (Al-Abd al-Rahman). A student of knowledge visited us and told us that this is not permissible; because these bags may be thrown in places where one is ashamed to mention them. He added that persisting in this is disbelief. We, praise be to Allah, did not intend to insult the Glorious Name, and this entire matter was done with good intentions on our part. Furthermore, this is our trademark and our name for many years. If there is disbelief in what we have done, we disavow it to Allah the Exalted. Therefore, we have unanimously agreed to write to you, may Allah have mercy on you, because of our trust in your knowledge.
A : It is obligatory to change the title on the bags; because it contains one of the names of Allah the Exalted, which is (al-Rahman), and its remaining in the title exposes it to desecration. So seek a title free of that, and may Allah guide you. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
