Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Fatwa No. ( 19939 )
Q: What is the meaning of the shadow mentioned in the hadith of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):
There are seven whom Allah will shade in His shade on the day on which there is no shade except His shadeسبعة يظلهم الله في ظله يوم لا ظل إلا ظله
Muwatta Malik 51:14
the hadith.

A: The meaning of the shadow in the hadith is: it is the shadow of the Throne of the Most Merciful, Blessed and Exalted is He, as it came explained in the hadith of Salman (may Allah be pleased with him) in (Sunan Sa'id ibn Mansur ), and in it:
There are seven whom Allah will shade in His shadeسبعة يظلهم الله في ظل عرشه
Muwatta Malik 51:14
the hadith. The Hafith Ibn Hajar (may Allah have mercy on him) graded its chain as good in (al-Fath 2\ 144). And the Hafith Ibn Rajab (may Allah have mercy on him) said, at the end of his commentary on this hadith from (Sahih al-Bukhari 6\ 51), the text of which is: (And Imam Ahmad and al-Tirmidhi narrated it and he graded it as authentic, from the hadith of Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) who said:
Whoever relieves a debtor or forgives his debt will be in the shadow of the Throne on the Day of Resurrectionمن نفس عن غريمه أو محا عنه كان في ظل العرش يوم القيامة
Sunan ad-Darimi 18:59
. And this indicates that the meaning of the shadow of Allah is: the shadow of His Throne. And Ibn al-Qayyim (may Allah have mercy on him) pointed to this meaning in (al-Wabil al-Sayb) and at the end of his book (Rawdat al-Muhibbin).
And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad and his family and his Companions.
