Hitting livestock on the road when the owner is unknown

Fatwa number ( 15689 )
Q: What is the ruling on a person who is traveling in a long line and hits an animal from the livestock, and does not know its owner ? What is the ruling on that?
A : It is obligatory for the one who hits an animal from the livestock to guarantee that animal by its value, and to pay it to its owner or his heirs. If that is not possible, he should give the value in charity to the poor with the intention of it being on behalf of the owner. If the owner comes, or if the owner or his heirs come, he informs the one who came of what he did. If they approve it, otherwise the charity becomes his, and he pays him the value. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
