The eighth question of Fatwa No. ( 3377 )
Q 8: How should a Muslim treat his Muslim brother?
Vol. 8: A Muslim has many rights over another Muslim, as detailed in the Book of Allah the Exalted and the Sunnah of His Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him). Among these rights is cooperating with him in righteousness and piety, and not cooperating with him in sin and aggression. Allah the Exalted said:
And cooperate in righteousness and piety, but do not cooperate in sin and aggression.
[Al-Ma'idah 5:2]
Among them is what the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) mentioned in his saying:
A Muslim has six duties towards another Muslim.” When asked what they were he replied, “When you meet him salute him ; when he issues an invitation to you, accept it; when he asks your advice give it to him ; when he sneezes and praises God say, ‘God have mercy on you’; when he is ill visit him ; and when he dies follow him to the grave.”
Mishkat al-Masabih 1525
narrated by Muslim . Among them is his saying:
Two should not converse to the exclusion of another until they are mixing with people since that would distress him.
Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 1171
narrated by al-Bukhari and Muslim . Among them is his saying:
A man should not ask another man to get up from his place in order to take his seat. But you should make room for each other and spread out.
Bulugh al-Maram 16:5
narrated by al-Bukhari and Muslim . Among them is his saying:
None of you will have faith till he wishes for his (Muslim) brother what he likes for himself.
Sahih al-Bukhari 13
narrated by al-Bukhari and Muslim . Among them is his saying:
It is not permissible for a Muslim to have estranged relations with his brother beyond three nights, the one turning one way and the other turning the other way when they meet; the better of the two is one who is the first to give a greeting.
Sahih Muslim 2560a
narrated by al-Bukhari and Muslim . Among them is his saying:
Don't consider anything insignificant out of good things even if it is that you meet your brother with a cheerful countenance.
Sahih Muslim 2626
, and his saying:
when you prepare the broth, add water to that and give that (as a present) to your neighbour.
Sahih Muslim 2625b
, both narrated by Muslim . Among them is his saying:
Don't nurse grudge and don't bid him out for raising the price and don't nurse aversion or enmity and don't enter into a transaction when the others have entered into that transaction and be as fellow-brothers and servants of Allah. A Muslim is the brother of a Muslim. He neither oppresses him nor humiliates him nor looks down upon him. The piety is here, (and while saying so) he pointed towards his chest thrice. It is a serious evil for a Muslim that he should look down upon his brother Muslim. All things of a Muslim are inviolable for his brother in faith: his blood, his wealth and his honour.
Sahih Muslim 2564a
narrated by Muslim . And so on, from the texts indicating the etiquettes of Islamic brotherhood. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
