Fatwa number ( 18205 )
Q: There is a woman whose son failed in his final school year for health reasons, but he passed and his name was announced on the radio. One of her relatives brought her the news of his success, as she did not have a radio. The mother gave in charity to the one who brought her the news a garment (a piece of cloth) that she would buy for her from the first salary her son receives. However, her son refused and did not give her from his salary what would enable her to fulfill her vow, despite her pressing him. A very long time has passed since this incident. What should the mother do now? Is she sinful? Does she have to pay an expiation? Is the son sinful? Does he have to pay an expiation? And can I do something toward her, such as paying the expiation on behalf of the mother or something similar? This is with
the knowledge that they are still alive.

A: The son should help his mother to fulfill her vow, especially the one he made for his sake. If someone else helps her to fulfill her vow, there is no harm. If she is unable to fulfill it, she must pay the expiation for an oath, which is: freeing a believing slave, or feeding ten poor people, giving each poor person one and a half kilograms of food, or clothing them. If she cannot do that, she must fast for three days. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
