Fatwa number ( 12818 )
Q: I submit to you my confusion and fear regarding a vow I made but was unable to fulfill. I am, O honorable Shaykh, a woman who married a young man eight years ago, and Allah did not will for me to have children. When the time passed and I grew desperate, despite the fact that there is no despair in the mercy of Allah, I made a vow to Allah that if I were blessed with a child, I would not leave my house for one year. I do not know how I said this. Allah willed it and blessed me with a son two months ago, and we named him Ahmad. I hope you will inform me what is required of me to be released from my vow, for I am deeply regretful and afraid of the consequences. May Allah preserve you and benefit all Muslims with your knowledge.
A: If the matter is as you described, you must expiate the vow with the expiation for an oath, and you are permitted to leave your house. The expiation is: freeing a believing slave, or feeding ten poor people, or clothing them. If you are unable to do so, fast for three days. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
