The third question of Fatwa number ( 1607 )
Q3: If I know about some people that they do not pray, and do not remember Allah, but rather they do beyond that evil deeds that anger Allah the Exalted
and His Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) in every respect, is it permissible for me to backbite them to inform people about them, or is it not permissible for me to do so?
A3 : You must first advise them, so you order them to do what Allah has commanded them to do, and you disapprove of them doing what Allah has forbidden them from doing. If they comply, even little by little, then continue with them in advising them as much as you are able. Otherwise, avoid them as much as you are able, to guard against fitnah (trial, discord or temptation) and to stay away from the wrong. After that, you may mention them for what they are in of negligence in obligatory duties and doing wrongs when the causes arise, with the intention of informing about them and protecting people from their evil. It may become obligatory for you to do so if someone asks you for advice regarding marrying into their family, partnering with them, or employing them, for example, or if you fear that a person will fall into their snares and be harmed by their evil. In that case, it is obligatory for you to clarify their condition to rescue the people of good from their evil, and in the hope that they will repent if they know that people have turned away from them and avoided them. It is not permissible for you to take mentioning their bad conduct as consolation for yourself and for people, or as entertainment to amuse yourselves with in gatherings, for that is spreading evil, and through it souls become numb and their sense of detesting wrongs disappears or weakens. It is not permissible for you to fabricate wrongs they have not done, desiring to increase the defaming of their condition and the disparaging of them, for that is lying and slander, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) has forbidden it. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad and his family and his Companions.
