The grave of Ahmad al-Isawi in Kazakhstan

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Fatwa number ( 21019 )
Q: I am a citizen of the Republic of Kazakhstan , and there is in my country a grave of a man named Ahmad al-Isawi , and people make pilgrimages to his grave, visit it, and offer acts of worship at it. What is the ruling on this? May Allah reward you with good, and what do you advise our Muslim brothers in Kazakhstan ? May Allah reward you with all good?
A: Islam is built upon five pillars, which the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) explained by saying:
Islam is based upon five: the testimony of La Ilaha Illallah, and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, the establishment of the Salat, giving the Zakat, fasting (the month of) Ramadan, and performing Hajj to the House.
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 2609Sahih (Darussalam)
, and the meaning of (testifying that there is no god but Allah) is: there is no deity worthy of worship except Allah. It is obligatory to single out Allah with all types of worship, both apparent and hidden, such as fear, hope, love, awe, turning to Him, prayer, fasting, Hajj, vows, slaughter, supplication, seeking aid, and other acts of worship. This is tawhid (the oneness of Allah), and Allah does not accept from anyone any religion other than this. It is promised to its adherent entry into Paradise and salvation from the Fire, as is known from the many texts of the Qur'an and Sunnah, such as the saying of Allah the Exalted:
Worship Allah and associate nothing with Himوَاعْبُدُوا اللَّهَ وَلاَ تُشْرِكُوا بِهِ شَيْئًا
[An-Nisa 4:36]
, and His saying:
And We certainly sent into every nation a messenger, [saying], "Worship Allah and avoid Taghut."
[An-Nahl 16:36]
, and His saying the Exalted:
And I did not create the jinn and mankind except to worship Me.
[Adh-Dhariyat 51:56]
, and His saying the Exalted:
Indeed, Allah does not forgive association with Him, but He forgives what is less than that for whom He wills. And he who associates others with Allah has certainly gone far astray.
[An-Nisa 4:116]
, and His saying:
And he who associates others with Allah has certainly fabricated a tremendous sin.
[An-Nisa 4:48]
, and His saying:
Indeed, he who associates others with Allah - Allah has forbidden him Paradise, and his refuge is the Fire. And there are not for the wrongdoers any helpers.
[Al-Ma'idah 5:72]

and His saying:
(162) Say, "Indeed, my prayer, my rites of sacrifice, my living and my dying are for Allah, Lord of the worlds. (163) No partner has He. And this I have been commanded, and I am the first [among you] of the Muslims."
[Al-An'am 6:162-163]
, and His saying:
So pray to your Lord and sacrifice [to Him alone].
[Al-Kawthar 108:2]
, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Whoever dies while still invoking anything other than Allah as a rival to Allah, will enter Hell (Fire).
Sahih al-Bukhari 4497
, narrated by al-Bukhari in (his Sahih), and he also said, may peace and blessings be upon him:
He who met Allah without associating anything with Allah entered Paradise and he who met Him associating (anything) with Him entered Fire.
Sahih Muslim 93b
, narrated by Muslim in (his Sahih). This is the tawhid that is the right of Allah over His servants. Whoever directs this right to other than Allah, or directs part of it to other than Allah, has committed major shirk (associating partners with Allah) and disbelieved in the Great Allah. This is like one who calls upon the dead and seeks their aid to bring benefit or ward off harm, and slaughters for them and makes vows for them. Allah the Exalted said, clarifying the misguidance and destruction of those who call upon other than Him:
(106) And do not invoke besides Allah that which neither benefits you nor harms you, for if you did, then indeed you would be of the wrongdoers.'" (107) And if Allah should touch you with adversity, there is no remover of it except Him; and if He intends for you good, then there is no repeller of His bounty. He causes it to reach whom He wills of His servants. And He is the Forgiving, the Mercifulوَلاَ تَدْعُ مِنْ دُونِ اللَّهِ مَا لاَ يَنْفَعُكَ وَلاَ يَضُرُّكَ فَإِنْ فَعَلْتَ فَإِنَّكَ إِذًا مِنَ الظَّالِمِينَ (106) وَإِنْ يَمْسَسْكَ اللَّهُ بِضُرٍّ فَلا كَاشِفَ لَهُ إِلا هُوَ وَإِنْ يُرِدْكَ بِخَيْرٍ فَلا رَادَّ لِفَضْلِهِ يُصِيبُ بِهِ مَنْ يَشَاءُ مِنْ عِبَادِهِ وَهُوَ الْغَفُورُ الرَّحِيمُ
[Yunus 10:106-107]

And He the Glorious and Exalted said:
Indeed, those you worship besides Allah do not possess for you [the power of] provision. So seek from Allah provision and worship Him and be grateful to Him. To Him you will be returned."
[Al-'Ankabut 29:17]
, and He the Mighty and Majestic said:
(5) And who is more astray than he who invokes besides Allah those who will not respond to him until the Day of Resurrection, and they, of their invocation, are unaware. (6) And when the people are gathered [that Day], they [who were invoked] will be enemies to them, and they will be deniers of their worship.
[Al-Ahqaf 46:5-6]
, and He the Exalted said:
Is He [not best] who responds to the desperate one when he calls upon Him and removes evil and makes you inheritors of the earth? Is there a deity with Allah? Little do you remember.
[An-Naml 27:62]
. Based on what has preceded, what some of the people of your country do at the aforementioned grave, approaching the deceased with some acts of worship, is major shirk that expels one from the religion. Even if they do it to approach Allah and believe that doing it at the grave is a cause for its acceptance, this is an innovated tawassul (seeking nearness to Allah through a means) and a means to shirk. It is obligatory for them to repent to Allah from this action and to make their religion sincere for Allah alone. It is obligatory for everyone to take care to learn the pillars of Islam and faith as they came in the Qur'an and Sunnah, and as explained by the scholars of the Sunnah and the community,
and to beware of falling into the nullifiers of faith and Islam, such as shirk and others. It is also obligatory for one whom Allah has given knowledge and understanding to call to the tawhid of Allah the Exalted through appropriate methods and beneficial ways, as He the Exalted said:
And who is better in speech than one who invites to Allah and does righteousness and says, "Indeed, I am of the Muslims."
[Fussilat 41:33]
, and as He the Exalted said:
Say, "This is my way; I invite to Allah with insight, I and those who follow me. And exalted is Allah; and I am not of those who associate others with Him."
[Yusuf 12:108]
. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad and his family and his Companions.
