Q: Do we say to a Jew or Christian who lives among Muslims, or who has heard a great deal about Islam, the Qur'an, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), that when he dies he is going to the Fire, even though he died upon Judaism or Christianity and did not change it? Or do we refrain from judging him, just as we refrain from judging a sinful Muslim who persists in major sins and then dies, saying that he is under the will of Allah (Mighty and Majestic)? Please give us a ruling, and may you be rewarded.
A: The position of the people of the Sunnah is that one does not rule that a specific person is among the people of the Fire or among the people of Paradise, except for those whom the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) testified to. However, we hope for the doer of good and fear for the doer of evil, and only Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) knows the endings of affairs and their outcomes. It is known that the Jews and the Christians are disbelievers, and everyone who dies upon disbelief is among the people of the Fire, just as everyone who dies upon
faith in Allah and His Messenger Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) is among the people of Paradise, as He (Glorified and Exalted is He) said:[At-Tawbah 9:72] the verse from Surat al-Tawbah, and He (the Exalted) said regarding the disbelievers: [Al-Ma'idah 5:37] . And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
