Placing the sins of a Muslim upon a Jew or a Christian

Machine translationRead the Arabic original

The second question of Fatwa No. ( 2718 ):

Q2: Placing what is forgiven of a Muslim's sins on the Day of Resurrection upon a Jew or a Christian, and the difficulty this poses with the saying of Allah the Exalted:
and you will not be recompensed except for what you used to do.وَلاَ تُجْزَوْنَ إِلا مَا كُنْتُمْ تَعْمَلُونَ
[Ya-Sin 36:54]
, and similar verses from the Qur'an. I hope Your Eminence will graciously remove the confusion?

A2: As for the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):
and Allah would forgive them and He would place in their stead the Jews and the Christiansفيغفرها للمسلمين ويضعها على اليهود والنصارى
Sahih Muslim 2767d
, the narrator of this hadith expressed doubt about it, and it is not to be cited as evidence when there is doubt, and because it contradicts the apparent meaning of the Noble Qur'an. However, if it is authentic from him (peace and blessings be upon him), he does not speak except the truth, and it must be interpreted in a way that aligns with other evidence. This is by interpreting it as referring to the Jews and Christians who were the cause of Muslims falling into the sins that were forgiven for them. This is based on the saying of the Exalted:
That they may bear their own burdens in full on the Day of Resurrection and some of the burdens of those whom they misguide without knowledgeلِيَحْمِلُوا أَوْزَارَهُمْ كَامِلَةً يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ وَمِنْ أَوْزَارِ الَّذِينَ يُضِلُّونَهُمْ بِغَيْرِ عِلْمٍ
[An-Nahl 16:25]
, and the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):
Whoever calls to misguidance will have upon him the like of the sin of whoever acts upon it after him, and that will not diminish anything from their sinsمن دعا إلى ضلالة كان عليه مثل إثم من عمل بها من بعده لا ينقص ذلك من آثامهم شيئًا
, and the hadiths that came with the same meaning. And success is from Allah. May Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
