Celebrating the Festivals of the Disbelievers
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The first and second questions of Fatwa No. ( 16419 )
Q 1: Some Muslims celebrate the festivals of non-Muslims and festivals for which Allah has not sent down any authority, such as Mother’s Day, Sham al-Nasim, and New Year’s Day. What is the ruling on those who celebrate these festivals?
A 1: All of these are religious innovations (bid'ah); it is not permissible to celebrate them or to adopt them as festivals. In Islam, there are only two festivals: the festival at the end of Ramadan ('Id al-Fitr) and the festival of sacrifice ('Id al-Adha). Therefore, one whose insight Allah has illuminated with knowledge of the truth in this matter should advise and guide with gentleness and softness those who hold celebrations for these innovative festivals. If they abandon them, well and good; otherwise, they are persisting in an innovation and are sinful for doing so.
