Multiple Oaths

Fatwa No. ( 7201 )
Q: I inform you that I married a woman, and an agreement was reached between me and the wife’s father regarding the mahr, which was thirty-five thousand riyals. After the marriage contract was concluded and I requested to take my wife, I was surprised by the wife’s father demanding a mahr of eighty-five thousand riyals. I refused this demand, and problems continued between me and the wife’s father for a full year. I swore that I would not pay any amount except within the limit of fifty-five thousand riyals, but unfortunately, her father did not agree and insisted on the amount of 85,000. I repeated my oath many times that I would not pay what was demanded of me. Then, people of good intervened and reconciled me with my wife’s father by having me pay an amount of seventy thousand riyals. I said: I have sworn and I cannot go back on my oath, but they forced me to pay seventy thousand riyals. I actually paid the mentioned amount out of fear of the many problems that had lasted for a year and two months. I wish to be informed about the oath, which is that I swore and said: I swear by Allah, the Most High, the Mighty, and by Allah, counting what is between the
heavens and the earth, that I will not pay any amount other than fifty-five thousand riyals. But unfortunately, I did not fulfill my oath. I ask you to inform me about what is clarified in this letter, and I have the highest respect for you.

A: If the situation is as described, you must pay the expiation for an oath for the multiple oaths you mentioned. It is: feeding ten poor people, or clothing them, or freeing a believing slave. If you cannot find the means to do so, then fast for three days. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
