The third question of Fatwa No. ( 2442 )
Q 3: What is the ruling on depicting the Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) on school stages?
A 3: The Council of Senior Scholars has previously considered this matter and issued a decision regarding it. The text of its content is as follows: 1 - Allah, Glorified and Exalted is He, has praised the Companions and clarified their high status and noble position. Presenting the life of any one of them in the form of a play or a film contradicts this praise with which Allah praised them, and lowers them from the high status that Allah granted them and honored them with. 2 - Depicting any one of them will be a place for mockery and ridicule, and it will be handled by people who generally have no place for righteousness and piety in their public lives and noble morals, along with the fact that theater owners intend to make this a means to material gain. And whatever caution is exercised, it will include lying and backbiting. Also, depicting the Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) places them in a deplorable position in the minds of people, so trust in the Companions of the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) wavers, the awe in the hearts of the Muslim viewers diminishes, and the door of doubt is opened to Muslims regarding their religion, and debate and discussion arise concerning the Companions
of Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him). It also includes the necessity that one of the actors take the position of Abu Jahl and his like, and that cursing of Bilal and cursing of the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) and what he brought of Islam proceed from his mouth. There is no doubt that this is an abomination. It also serves as a goal to confuse the thoughts of Muslims regarding their creed, the Book of their Lord, and the Sunnah of their Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him). 3 - What is said about the existence of a benefit, which is displaying noble morals and the best of etiquette, with seeking the truth, controlling the biography, and not neglecting any of it in any way; out of desire for admonition and taking a lesson - this is merely a hypothesis and assumption. For whoever knows the state of the actors and what they aim for knows that this type of acting is rejected by the reality of Muslims and the pioneers of acting, and what is their affair in their lives and works. 4 - Among the established principles in the Shari'ah is that what is pure or predominant harm is forbidden. Depicting the Companions, assuming there is a benefit in it, its harm is predominant. So, in order to care for the benefit, block the means to harm, and preserve the dignity of the Companions of Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), it is obligatory to prevent that.
