Engaging in the profession of acting

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Fatwa number ( 21023 )
Q: I act on television and radio, and praise be to Allah that I have not used this for shameful matters. I perform some good deeds and pray the obligatory prayers, praise be to Allah. I am close to my family and to people of good, and my committed brothers can testify to that. My brother’s wife is committed, but I have noticed these days that she is demanding that my brother’s sons and daughters boycott me and not acknowledge me as their uncle. I did not tell my brother about this. The question is: Which is the greater sin: the actor or severing family ties? Please inform us, may Allah reward you.
A: It is not permissible for you to engage in the profession of acting; because of the disparagement of the people being portrayed if they are specific individuals, and because of what acting entails
of joking and play, which are not befitting a Muslim. So we advise you to leave this profession and seek your livelihood from something else. Whoever leaves something for the sake of Allah, Allah will replace it with something better for him,
And whoever fears Allah - He will make for him a way out (3) And will provide for him from where he does not expect.وَمَنْ يَتَّقِ اللَّهَ يَجْعَلْ لَهُ مَخْرَجًا (2) وَيَرْزُقْهُ مِنْ حَيْثُ لاَ يَحْتَسِبُ
[At-Talaq 65:2-3]
. Perhaps your brother’s wife intended by ordering you to be boycotted to warn you against this profession so that you would leave it, in which case her intention is good—if Allah wills. But if she intended something else, then severing family ties is not permissible, and it is one of the major sins. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
