Fatwa number ( 20856 )
Q: It is not hidden from Your Eminence the multitude of festivals held in our good country in these years. Among the fundamental components of these festivals are music and singing, bringing in male and female singers from inside and outside the country, distracting people from what benefits them in their religion and worldly affairs, and squandering money in what does not please Allah, Mighty and Majestic. We ask Your Eminence to issue an official fatwa on this matter and to warn our Muslim brothers from immersing themselves in it. We ask Allah to magnify your reward and to make Islam and Muslims benefit from you. Peace be upon you, and Allah’s mercy and blessings. The Committee also reviewed what was sent to the Eminence of the Grand Mufti from some questioners, referred to the Committee by the General Secretariat of the Council of Senior Scholars with number (1577) and date 7/3/1420 AH. The text of the question is: Some notables in our region, during these days (the summer vacation days), have in their celebrations and weddings certain manifestations, including: inviting many singers, poets, and actors from inside and outside the Kingdom when they hold their parties, weddings, and various occasions, and they invite many people to attend. We would like to be informed about the following: 1 - What is the ruling on holding such parties, where all or most of the time is filled with singing, music, and instruments of amusement? 2 - What is the ruling on spending on them, inviting to them, encouraging them, and rejoicing
in them? And what is the ruling on bringing in singers of non-Islamic nationalities, spending on them, listening to them, encouraging them, and rejoicing in their presence? 3 - What is the ruling on those who attend their gatherings to listen to them? Please give us a ruling, may you be rewarded, as some consider such things permissible and that the Shari'ah does not forbid all of the above. May Allah reward you with good.
A : It is forbidden for a Muslim to hold parties or festivals that include reprehensible matters; such as singing and music, the mixing of men and women, and bringing in sorcerers and magicians; due to the many pieces of evidence from the Shari'ah indicating the prohibition of these matters, and that they are among the causes of falling into what Allah has forbidden of lewdness and transgression. Allah, Mighty and Majestic, has threatened with painful punishment whoever loves the spread of lewdness among the believers and calls to it and assists in it. He, the Exalted, said:[An-Nur 24:19] , and if it is established that holding these parties and festivals is forbidden, then attending them, spending money on them, encouraging them, and promoting them are all also forbidden; because it is a waste of money and time in what does not please Allah, the Exalted, and it is cooperation in sin and aggression. And Allah, the Exalted, says:
[Al-Ma'idah 5:2] And in the hadith agreed upon for its authenticity, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) . And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad and his family and his Companions.

And cooperate in righteousness and piety, but do not cooperate in sin and aggression. And fear Allah; indeed, Allah is severe in penalty.
