Fatwa No. ( 17364 )
Q: I would like to inform you that I am a married young man with children, and I work as a musician playing various musical instruments alone, without singing or dancers, in a luxurious restaurant where customers dine and drink to the music I play. It is permitted to serve alcohol to customers upon request. In addition, I am an agricultural engineer who owns fifteen feddans of arable land that yield me a large income. A pious young Muslim advised me to leave my job in music because it is forbidden, and to devote myself solely to farming, even though my income from music is very large and helps me support many poor relatives. Some people told me that my work in music is lawful. I ask for your ruling on this matter, as I am eager to protect my religion and to provide for my family and relatives from lawful sources.
A: The use of musical instruments and entertainment, and listening to them, is forbidden and not permissible to do; for there is much evidence for this, including the saying of Allah the Exalted:
[Al-Ma'idah 5:2] , and what is authentic from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that he said: Sahih al-Bukhari 5590 and other evidence. Playing music falls under the musical instruments mentioned in the hadith, and it is cooperation in sin and transgression. In your work, you are assisting in the drinking of alcohol. Therefore, the one who advised you to leave this job is right, so you must hasten to leave it, repent to Allah the Exalted, and seek His forgiveness for what has passed from you. Allah will replace it for you with something better from the lawful sources of provision. It is authentic from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that he said: . And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.

And cooperate in righteousness and piety, but do not cooperate in sin and aggression. And fear Allah; indeed, Allah is severe in penalty.
