Q4: What is the definitive ruling on listening to instruments of amusement and music? Since chaos has broken out among us after a student in the College of Islamic Sharia at the University of Jordan wrote an article discussing the weakness of the hadith narrated in Sahih al-Bukhari, regarding the prohibition of instruments of amusement. The hadith is: The hadith, or as the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said. It is known that the article caused fitnah (trial, discord or temptation) among us because it was published in an Islamic magazine, and this magazine is distributed among us in India . What is your opinion? May Allah reward you with good?
A4 : Listening to instruments of amusement, such as music and others, is forbidden by consensus, as reported by more than one scholar. The hadith in al-Bukhari is authentic, and there is no value in the opinion of those who weakened it who are enthusiasts of amusement. There are many other proofs from the Book and the Sunnah, such as the saying of Allah the Exalted:[Luqman 31:6] ,
which the great Companions interpreted as singing, and His saying to Satan:[Al-Isra 17:64] which they interpreted as singing and musical instruments. We direct you to the book (Ighathat al-Lahfan) by Ibn al-Qayyim, which elaborates on this issue; it is a printed and widely circulated book. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
