Fatwa No. ( 2776 )
Q: I have a wife who took a plane from Khamis Mushayt to Jeddah, and because it was her first time flying, she vowed to Allah that if the plane landed safely at Jeddah Airport , she would fast three days every month, but she suffers from an illness that is likely to kill her. Does she have a dispensation to leave off fasting and do something lighter to preserve her life?
A: If the situation is as described, that she vowed to fast, and that she suffers from an illness that prevents her from fulfilling her vow, and a trusted specialist doctor has determined that there is no hope of her recovery from this illness, then she must expiate her vow with the expiation of an oath. This is by freeing a believing slave, or clothing ten poor people, or feeding them by giving each of the ten poor people half a sa' of wheat, dates, rice, or the like of the kind of food she usually eats. And if there is hope of her recovery from it, it is obligatory for her to fast when she is able, in fulfillment of her vow; because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:Sunan Ibn Majah 2126Sahih (Darussalam) .
And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
