The Nature of Siblinghood Through Breastfeeding

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Fatwa No. ( 15824 )
Q: If I have a mother through breastfeeding, what is my obligation toward her, and should I address her as "O my mother" or by some other term? Likewise, her daughter who was breastfed with me.
Should I call her "O my sister"? And how should I greet them; is it by shaking hands or kissing, and likewise her son who is younger than the daughter, is he my brother? Is there a difference if her brother is older or younger than her? And my younger brother was breastfed with her younger brother, is she his sister? And is it permissible for the daughter to kiss her brother through breastfeeding? We ask for your guidance.
.

A: The condition for breastfeeding that establishes prohibition is that it occurs within the first two years of the child's life, and that it consists of five breastfeedings or more. The description of a breastfeeding is that the child holds the breast and sucks milk; when he releases it, either to rest or to move to another breast, it is counted as one breastfeeding, and so on until five breastfeedings are completed. If it is less, even by one breastfeeding, it does not establish prohibition; because of His saying, the Exalted, regarding those who are prohibited:
your [milk] mothers who nursed you, your sisters through nursingوَأُمَّهَاتُكُمُ اللاتِي أَرْضَعْنَكُمْ وَأَخَوَاتُكُمْ مِنَ الرَّضَاعَةِ
[An-Nisa 4:23]
, and His saying, peace and blessings be upon him, in the hadith agreed upon by al-Bukhari and Muslim:
Breast-feeding makes unlawful (for marriages) the same things that blood tie make unlawful.يحرم مـن الرضاع ما يحرم من النسب
Sunan Ibn Majah 1937Sahih (Darussalam)
And Muslim narrated from A'ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) that she said: "It was among what was revealed in the Qur'an that ten known breastfeedings establish prohibition, then they were abrogated by: (five known breastfeedings), and the Messenger of Allah passed away
while they were still in what is recited from the Qur'an), and from A'ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) she said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:
One or two sucks does not make marriage unlawfulلا تحرم المصة ولا المصتان
Sunan Abi Dawud 2063Sahih (Al-Albani)
Narrated by Muslim . So if these conditions are met in the breastfeeding, the breastfed child becomes a son to the wet nurse through breastfeeding, and all her children become his brothers through breastfeeding, and he becomes a son to her husband to whom her milk is attributed, and the prohibited relatives of the husband all become prohibited relatives to the breastfed child, and his children are brothers to the breastfed child, whether they are from the wet nurse or from other wives. And what follows from the breastfeeding that establishes prohibition is the prohibition of marriage between the breastfed child and the prohibited relatives of the wet nurse and the prohibited relatives of the husband among women, and it is recommended to maintain ties between them through greeting and the like. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad and his family and his Companions.
