The fourth question of Fatwa No. ( 16063 )
Q4: Is there repentance for major sins? What is the method of repenting from a major sin or a heinous act? And if I commit a major sin or a heinous act, then I regret it and abandon it by the grace of Allah, will my repentance be accepted or not?
A4: Repentance is accepted from all sins, whether major or minor, including shirk (associating partners with Allah), kufr (disbelief), and killing without right. Allah the Exalted said:[Al-Anfal 8:38] And Allah the Exalted said: [Az-Zumar 39:53] The scholars have agreed that this verse is regarding those who repent. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: , and there are three conditions for the acceptance of repentance: The first: Abandoning the sin out of fear of Allah and reverence for Him. The second: Resolving not to return to it. The third: Regretting what has passed. If the sin involves the rights of one of the people, it is obligatory to give him his right or seek his forgiveness. If seeking his forgiveness is not possible, such as in the case of backbiting, it is obligatory for him, along with repentance, to mention him with the best qualities he knows about him in the gatherings where he backbit him.
And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad and his family and his Companions.
