Does repentance expiate major sins?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
I committed one of the major sins, so is repentance and seeking forgiveness sufficient for it?

Answer:
Sincere repentance causes Allah to expiate all sins, even shirk (associating partners with Allah); for Allah the Exalted said:
And turn to Allah in repentance, all of you, O believers, that you might succeed.وَتُوبُوا إِلَى اللَّهِ جَمِيعًا أَيُّهَا الْمُؤْمِنُونَ لَعَلَّكُمْ تُفْلِحُونَ
[al-Nur: 31], and He said in Surat al-Furqan:
And those who do not invoke with Allah another deity or kill the soul which Allah has forbidden [to be killed], except by right, and do not commit unlawful sexual intercourse. And whoever should do that will meet a penalty.
[Al-Furqan 25:68]
the punishment will be doubled for him on the Day of Resurrection, and he will abide therein in humiliation except for those who repent, believe, and do righteous deeds; those, Allah will replace their evil deeds with good ones, and Allah is Forgiving, Merciful [al-Furqan: 68-70].
So, the Exalted informed in these two verses that the one who associates partners with Allah, the one who kills without right, and the one who commits unlawful sexual intercourse will incur a penalty; his punishment will be multiplied on the Day of Resurrection, and he will abide therein in humiliation, except for the one who repents, believes, and does righteous deeds.
And the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Repentance wipes out what came before itالتوبة تجب ما قبلها
, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
The one who repents from sin is like one who did not sin.التائب من الذنب كمن لا ذنب له
Sunan Ibn Majah 4250Da’if (Darussalam)
.
The conditions for sincere repentance, by which Allah expiates sins, are three:
The first is regret over the evil deeds and sins one has committed.
The second is abandoning them and turning away from them, out of fear of Allah the Exalted and out of reverence for Him.
The third is the sincere resolve not to return to them.
There is a fourth condition for the validity of repentance if the sin involves a creation; such as killing, beating, or taking money, and the like: and that is to give the person his right, or to seek his forgiveness for it.
We ask Allah to guide us and all Muslims to sincere repentance from all sins, for He is Generous and Noble.
