The first question of Fatwa No. ( 19219 )
Q 1: What is the reason that a person supplicates and is not answered ?
A 1: Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) commanded supplication and encouraged it, and promised to answer it, so He said:[Ghafir 40:60] And He the Exalted said: [Al-A'raf 7:55] And He the Exalted said: [Al-Furqan 25:77] But Allah may delay the answer for a wisdom He wills and a benefit for His servant, and Allah may give him better than what he asked for, as it is established from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that he said: And the barrier to the answer may be from the supplicant himself, by his having committed a sin in his supplication, or cut off a family tie, or transgressed in his request, or eaten what is forbidden, or the like of that. The supplicant should be sincere to Allah in his supplication and avoid the causes that stand between him and the answer, and he should seek the times of answer, such as the last third of the night, and between the adhan and the iqamah, and on Friday, for it has been reported that there is an hour in it in which no servant asks Allah for anything but that Allah gives it to him, and in the state of prostration in prayer, due to the hadith: "The closest a servant is to his Lord is when he is prostrating, so increase in supplication," and the supplication of a brother for his brother in his absence, and the supplication of the fasting person, the traveler, and the parent for his child, and the like of that. And the servant should persist with his Lord in his request and increase in supplication, so that perhaps Allah will answer his supplication, for supplication has great virtue, and even if it were not for the humility and submission to Allah the Exalted, and the display of need for Him, and the disavowal of power and strength, and the praise of Allah, and attributing generosity and kindness to Him, that would be better than what he asked for. And for that reason the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
It was narrated by the Imam al-Tirmidhi , and he said: Good and authentic, and it was narrated by Abu Dawud and al-Nasa'i and Ibn Majah in their (Sunan). And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad and his family and his Companions.
Q 1: What is the reason that a person supplicates and is not answered ?
A 1: Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) commanded supplication and encouraged it, and promised to answer it, so He said:
And your Lord says, "Call upon Me; I will respond to you." Indeed, those who disdain My worship will enter Hell [rendered] contemptible.
Call upon your Lord in humility and privately
Say, "What would my Lord care for you if not for your supplication?"
No servant supplicates to Allah with a supplication that contains no sin or severing of family ties but that Allah gives him one of three things: either he hastens his supplication for him in this world, or he delays it for him in the Hereafter, or He averts from him an evil equal to it. They said: O Messenger of Allah, then we will supplicate a lot. He said: Allah is more.
Supplication is worship
