The questioner : Is it permissible for one who has a debt to perform the obligatory Hajj if he has not performed it before, or if he has performed it but wants to do it voluntarily?
The Shaykh : If a person has a debt that consumes all the money he has, then Hajj is not obligatory upon him, because Allah the Exalted only made Hajj obligatory upon the one who is able to afford it. Allah the Exalted said:[Ali 'Imran 3:97] And one who has a debt that consumes what he has is not able to perform Hajj. Accordingly, he should pay off the debt, and then if things become easy for him afterwards, let him perform Hajj. As for if the debt is less than what he has, such that he has what is needed for Hajj after paying the debt, then he should pay off his debt and then perform Hajj at that time, whether it is obligatory or voluntary. However, he must hasten to perform the obligatory one, and as for the non-obligatory one, he has the choice: if he wishes, he may perform it voluntarily, and if he does not, there is no sin upon him.
