The Appropriate Length of the Garment in This Era

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Fatwa No. ( 17553 )
Q: A disagreement arose between me and one of the brothers regarding the issue of the length of the garment . What is the best practice in this era: should the Muslim make his garment reach to the middle of the shin, following the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):
The way for a believer to wear a lower garment is to have it halfway down his legsإزرة المسلم إلى نصف الساق
Sunan Abi Dawud 4093Sahih (Al-Albani)
or should he make his garment slightly above the ankles, so as not to draw attention, become a target of mockery, or drive people away from the religion because of raising the garment? My companion said that the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):
The way for a believer to wear a lower garment is to have it halfway down his legsإزار المسلم إلى نصف الساق
Sunan Abi Dawud 4093Sahih (Al-Albani)
is specific to the izars (lower garments) in Hajj and 'Umrah, while garments, trousers, and shawls do not fall under this understanding. My companion added that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) left the rebuilding of the Ka'bah on the foundations of Ibrahim out of fear of fitnah.

A: The man's garment should be between the middle of the shin and the ankle, and if
the society in which he lives has a custom of a specific length, such as garments reaching the ankle, then it is better not to differ from them in this, as long as their action is permissible by the Shari'ah, and praise be to Allah. This is not specific to the izar or to Hajj, but it encompasses all clothing. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
