Fatwa number ( 123 )
Q: I request answers to the following questions: 1 - the kurtah and the dul'ah . 2 - the sabbab on the back, the side, and the arms . 3 - the hummur applied to the lips and cheeks . 4 - the qassah and wrapping the head like a turban , or letting it hang down the back in a braid. 5 - the fastah , which is: the karmish placed on the dul'ah and the hem of the lower trousers 6 - shortening the sleeve of the garment to the middle of the forearm so that the ghawayish are visible . 7 - listening to the radio and television .
A: The inquiry consists of seven questions. The first six concern types of women's clothing and adornment, and the seventh concerns listening to the radio and television. The basis of the ruling on the first six is the application of the texts warning against exposing the 'awrah and what is equivalent to it, such as defining the clothing for the body, warning against altering Allah's creation, imitating men or non-Muslim women, and warning against displaying adornment to those for whom it is not permissible to display it to them. As for the kurtah and the sabbab that is on the back, the side, or the sleeves, they generally define the shape of the body, constitute an enticing adornment for onlookers regarding the woman, and are a fitnah whose consequences are feared. As for the dul'ah and shortening the sleeves of the garment to the middle of the forearm so that the ghawayish are visible, they involve exposing the 'awrah and displaying
the hidden adornment to non-mahram men, and in the fastah on the dul'ah and the hem of the trousers there is enticing adornment and a suspicious fitnah. Therefore, these five and what is equivalent to them are not permissible for a woman to display except to those mentioned by Allah the Exalted in His saying:
except to their husbands, their fathers, their husbands' fathers, their sons, their husbands' sons, their brothers, their brothers' sons, their sisters' sons, their women, that which their right hands possess, or those male attendants having no physical desire, or children who are not yet aware of the private aspects of womenوَلاَ يُبْدِينَ زِينَتَهُنَّ إِلاَّ لِبُعُولَتِهِنَّ أَوْ آبَائِهِنَّ أَوْ آبَاءِ بُعُولَتِهِنَّ أَوْ أَبْنَائِهِنَّ أَوْ أَبْنَاءِ بُعُولَتِهِنَّ أَوْ إِخْوَانِهِنَّ أَوْ بَنِي إِخْوَانِهِنَّ أَوْ بَنِي أَخَوَاتِهِنَّ أَوْ نِسَائِهِنَّ أَوْ مَا مَلَكَتْ أَيْمَانُهُنَّ أَوِ التَّابِعِينَ غَيْرِ أُولِي الْإِرْبَةِ مِنَ الرِّجَالِ أَوِ الطِّفْلِ الَّذِينَ لَمْ يَظْهَرُوا عَلَى عَوْرَاتِ النِّسَاءِ
[An-Nur 24:31]
Nor is it permissible for her to go outside her house wearing these clothes or similar ones, nor to display them to anyone other than those mentioned in the verse. Thus, she should not frequent public gatherings with them, such as mosques, the sites of Hajj and 'Umrah, wedding clubs, markets, and the like, where men and women, both mahram and non-mahram, gather, unless she wears over these clothes an abaya or a wide, covering garment that covers her entire body, is not transparent, does not draw attention, and does not entice whoever sees her, thereby avoiding suspicion and fitnah, protecting chastity, and blocking the means to evil and corruption.
And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad and his family and his Companions.
