Wearing the Turban
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Fatwa No. ( 17984 )
Q: By the grace of Allah, I have let my beard grow, shortened my garment, and worn a turban, following and emulating the Prophet. However, the strange thing is that many, many people have objected to this and mocked me for abandoning the ghutrah, shemagh, and iqal. They look at me with sarcasm and disapproval, as if I am doing something wrong or strange. Did the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) wear a turban ? Is it a confirmed Sunnah? Is this turban not suitable for the time we are in? What were the characteristics of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) in wearing the turban? Did it have colors like white and black? Will I be sinful for wearing it? And will I be sinful if I encourage those around me to wear it? Please inform us, may Allah reward you, and may Allah reward you with much good.
A: Praise be to Allah who guided you and enabled you to follow the Sunnah. What you mentioned regarding letting the beard grow is obligatory; because it is from the Sunnah of the Prophets and from the characteristics of the fitrah. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade shaving the beard and cutting it; because of what is in it of
imitating the disbelievers. As for shortening the garment, the obligatory thing is to shorten it to the ankles, and what falls below the ankles is isbal (letting the garment hang below the ankles), which is forbidden and a major sin among the major sins. As for wearing the turban, it is from the permissible things and is not a Sunnah as you imagined. It is better that you remain with what the people of your country wear on their heads, such as the ghutrah, shemagh, and the like. As for the people mocking you because of your holding fast to the religion and your eagerness to follow the Sunnah, do not pay attention to it, and do not let it concern you. May Allah guide us and you to understanding in the religion and acting upon the Sunnah of the Master of the Messengers. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
