Fatwa No. (15255)
Q: I am a teacher of geography in one of the intermediate schools in the region of Riyadh , and since a topic concerning the rotation of the earth on its axis and around the sun has come to me, and since I have previously read a book by your Eminence titled: (The Scriptural and Sensory Evidence for the Possibility of Ascending to the Planets, and for the Motion of the Sun and Moon and the Stillness of the Earth), where there was a contradiction between what you mentioned, your Eminence, and the school textbook; therefore, I ask your Eminence to inform me about this topic. And may Allah reward you with all good. .
A : It is obligatory for the geography teacher, if he presents to the students the geographers' theory regarding the stillness of the sun and the rotation of the earth around it, to clarify that this theory contradicts the Qur'anic verses and the Prophetic hadiths, and that it is obligatory to adopt what the Qur'an and Sunnah indicate, and to reject what contradicts that,
and there is no harm in presenting the geographers' theory in order to know it and refute it, like the other opposing schools of thought, not in order to believe in it and adopt it. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
