Maintaining Family Ties and Shaking Hands with Women
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The third question of Fatwa No. ( 21394 )
Q 3: I am a young man, 24 years old. I do not maintain ties with my relatives because of handshakes; for example, I do not go to my uncle’s and aunt’s house because they have daughters. As for my sisters’ houses, I do go to them because they live alone, except for one whom I do not visit because she lives with her husband’s family. Regarding visiting: I meet my uncles in the street and shake their hands. Is this correct regarding visiting, or is there another solution? May Allah reward you with good.
A 3: It is prescribed for you to visit your relatives, as this is part of maintaining family ties. However, you must not shake hands with women who are not among your mahram (close relatives one may not marry), due to the fitnah (trial, discord or temptation) involved. There is no harm in greeting them with words only, without shaking hands and without seclusion. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
