Depicting the Stories of the Qur'an in Animated Images

Fatwa No. ( 18027 )
Q: Some young men intend to produce computer discs that narrate stories from the Qur'an. They intend to depict some of these stories with animated images, with the aim of enriching the youth with what is found on television and other false entertainment, and to teach the youth the rulings of the religion in a simplified form. We ask you to issue a ruling, may Allah reward you, on the ruling of animated images (cartoons) , and whether these images are similar in ruling to television images in that both are not permanent and disappear, and whether these images are similar to the dolls that children play with in that they are for amusement, education, and representation (such as representing the Buraq in the form of a doll, like the cat that the Mother of the Believers, Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her), used to play with). We also ask you to issue a ruling on the depiction of the characters that appear in the stories of the Qur'an, from the righteous or others other than the prophets or the Companions, in drawn characters, such as depicting the People of the Cave or Uzair or others in the form of drawn characters.
A: This work mentioned in the question is not permissible for two reasons: First: It involves drawing forbidden images, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) cursed the image-makers and informed that they are the most severely punished of people on the Day of Resurrection. Second: These images are made into an interpretation of the Noble Qur'an, and this is tampering with the Book of Allah (Mighty and Majestic). A decision has been issued by the Council of the Senior Scholars to prohibit this work. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad and his family and companions.
