Fatwa No. ( 19855 )
Praise be to Allah alone, and may peace and blessings be upon the one after whom there is no prophet. And after: The Permanent Committee for Scholarly Research and Ifta has reviewed what was sent to His Eminence the Grand Mufti from the honorable Director of the Center for Da'wah and Guidance in Dammam , in his letter No. (22\1\1191) dated 8\8\1418 AH, accompanied by the inquiry submitted by His Excellency the General Director of Girls' Education in the Eastern Region, and referred to the Committee by the General Secretariat of the Council of Senior Scholars, No. (4744) dated 13\8\1418 AH. The inquirer asked a question, the text of which is as follows: We inform your eminence that we have provided some of the honorable Shaykhs at the center with a set of images from the Department of Home Economics, under the Educational Supervision Department in our administration. These images are for the subject of Home Economics, which covers (nutrition) and the nutritional value of vegetables and fruits among its lessons. As a type of illustrative aid, some schools draw panels of these vegetables and give each single item
two eyes, a nose, lips, and limbs (hands and feet), and perhaps clothing, along with some movement, as a type of innovation in the image and an attempt to attract the attention of the viewer, in addition to suggesting the benefits and features of this type through the general frame of the image. And as a precaution against falling into forbidden image-making, or imitating the depiction of beings with souls. We therefore hope that you will clarify this by providing us - as soon as possible - with a fatwa on this topic.

After the Committee studied the inquiry, it answered as follows: The aforementioned shapes containing images of beings with souls are not permissible to make or to approve in the study curricula in the lands of the Muslims; because they fall under the general evidence for the prohibition of image-making, and there is no dire necessity for them for teaching and illustration. Rather, they can be dispensed with, while still obtaining the knowledge and the expected benefit. This Ummah has passed through long centuries without them, and they became the strongest of nations in knowledge, the best in understanding, and the most in acquisition. What harm did it do them to leave images out of their studies? So it is not for us to commit what Allah has forbidden of image-making on the assumption that it is a necessity, when it is not a necessity. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad and his family and his Companions.
