Q: What is the difference between shirk-based tawassul and bid'ah-based tawassul ? May Allah reward you with good?
A : Shirk-based tawassul is that in which the one seeking nearness approaches the one through whom he seeks nearness with something from the types of worship, such as slaughtering, making vows, calling for aid, or supplication, just as the people of the pre-Islamic age of ignorance used to do, as Allah the Exalted said:[Yunus 10:18]
And it is like what the grave-worshippers do today around the shrines, of associating partners with Allah, calling upon the dead, and slaughtering and making vows for them. As for bid'ah-based tawassul: it is asking Allah by the status or the right of one of the prophets, the awliya (close friends of Allah), or the righteous, without approaching them with anything from worship. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
